Olá, pessoal. Como vocês estão? Nesse post, vamos falar um pouco sobre algumas curiosidades, e aproveitar para dar um up no seu vocabulário! Isso pois o tema de hoje são os proverbios em ingles!

Mas o que é que são provérbios, mesmo? Tratam-se de ditados populares, algumas “frases prontas” que descrevem conhecimentos sobre aspectos geralmente universais da vida, ou seja, pequenas dicas de sabedoria. Isso pois a maioria deles foi criado na antiguidade; não se trata de algo novo! Porém, justamente por falarem de coisas tão comuns de forma resumida, eles são utilizados até hoje.

Como perguntar as horas em inglês?

Primeiramente, em inglês você "ask the time" (= pergunta as horas) ou "ask what time it is" (= pergunta que horas são).

Parece algo simples, mas no geral as pessoas aprendem a frase "What time is it?", que está perfeitamente correta, mas quando se deparam com uma situação real onde alguém lhes pergunta as horas, acabam não entendendo. Isto acontece porque não estão acostumadas com as outras expressões, também muito usadas e comuns, nessas situações. Vamos vê-las abaixo:

What's the time? (mais comum no Ing. Britânico) = What time is it? = Que horas são?

Do you have the time? (Ing. Amer.) = Você tem as horas?

Have you got the time? ou Have you got the time on you? (Ing. Brit.) = Você tem as horas?

Do you know the time? = Você sabe as horas?

What time do you have? (Ing. Amer.) = Que horas você tem?

What time do you make it? (Ing. Brit.)= Que horas você tem?

Do you know what time it is? = Você sabe que horas são?

A partir de agora, ao assistir a um filme, preste atenção e verá que essas frases são bem comuns entre os nativos da língua inglesa. E na maioria das situações elas são iniciadas pela expressão "excuse me".

Como se diz “não ter papas na língua” em inglês?

A dica de hoje vem do blog INFLUX ENGLISH SCHOOL como se diz não ter papas na língua em inglês? Lembre-se, nada pode ser traduzido ao pé da letra!

A expressão “não ter papas na língua” em português significa o mesmo que “não medir as palavras” ou seja, “falar sem rodeios”, “falar o que pensa”. Em inglês, existem algumas maneiras de expressar essa ideia; porém, há uma expressão em especial cuja equivalência é muito precisa. Vejam abaixo:

not mince (your) words  = não ter papas na língua, não medir as palavras, falar o que pensa, etc.

Como curiosidade, o verbo to mince significa “moer”, “picar”, e é usado principalmente com carne (to mince the meat = moer a carne; minced beef = carne moída). Então, ao pé da letra, a expressão “not mince words” significa “não moer as palavras”.

She doesn’t mince her words. = She doesn’t mince words. Ela não tem papas na língua.

He doesn't mince his words when he has an opinion. Ele não tem papas na língua quando tem algo a dizer.

She certainly doesn’t mince her words and always speaks her mind. Ela certamente não tem papas na língua e sempre fala o que pensa.

Her husband doesn’t mince words. = Her husband doesn’t mince his words. O marido dela não tem papas na língua. / O marido dela não mede as palavras.

Água com gás e água sem gás em Inglês?

Se quiser beber água com gás, não peça water with gas. É bem provável que você seja envenenado se assim proceder.

Nos Estados Unidos, diga: club soda, sparkling water, mineral water (já vem com gás). Na Inglaterra, prefira: fizzy water e sparkling water. Água com gás é tecnicamente conhecida como carbonated water, mas não é coisa que se peça para beber. Comum nos dois países é a água pedida pelo nome da grife (designer water), assim:

– Can I have a Perrier please?

– Sorry sir, we’re out of Perrier. Would Malvern be ok? (Lamento, acabou a Perrier, serve Malvern?)

Caso prefira água sem gás, peça bottled water (recuso-me a traduzir isso), spring water (da fonte) ou mesmo ordinary water. Outra denominação comum é still water. Still, nesse caso, nada tem a ver com a tradução de “ainda”. Still significa algo que não se mexe, parado.

A friend in need is a friend indeed  is an Idiom and it means:  A friend in need is a friend indeed says that people often act friendly when they want to get something from us.  Example: "Hey buddy, how's it going? You look good. I love your jacket. Do you think you can give me a ride home?" 10 dicas do que não faze rde jeito nenhum para aprender Inglês!

1)      Focar o tempo todo na gramática! Os maiores especialistas recomendam que não deve focar muito em gramáticas, é como pensar o tempo todo no que falar, a língua é automática!

2)      Estudar exaustivamente palavra por palavra e decorar.

3)      É comum pensarmos em Português ou na língua nativa de seu país para falarmos em Inglês. É preciso focar o tempo todo, pensar automaticamente, isso se dá com o tempo.

4)      Medo e ansiedade, frustação com erros, insegurança também é uma das barreiras que devem ser quebradas. Lembre-se, somente a prática leva a perfeição. Mantenha a motivação e continue praticando.

5)      Não aprenda apenas em sala de aula, dedique-se pelo menos 10 minutos por dia.

6)      Falar antes de desenvolver essas habilidades, praticar o listening e a leitura. Não funciona.

7)      Não use palavras negativas, não crie barreiras, foque no que você quer.

8)      Faça por prazer, não por que seu pai quer, por que o mercado obriga. Tenha o hábito da leitura constante e da imersão natural no idioma.

9)      Esqueça os métodos milagrosos, fluência leva tempo e determinação. Varia de aluno para aluno, do nível intelectual de cada um.

10)   Seja você mesmo, não tente imitar nativos, o tempo, a prática e perfeição trará a fluência natural.

Also, remember that Mango Languages is available to you through the Library! It features ESL lessons for Arabic, Cantonese, Mandarin, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Brazilian Portuguese, Polish, Russian, Spanish, Turkish, and Vietnamese speakers. One of the most common mistake for English Learners, they want to be fluent, speaking fast without improve their English listening skill! Today English tips I'm going to talk about one of the most favorite YouTube Channel named Learn English or die (YouTube Link). Besides, it's really important dedicate at least 10 minutes a day keep in touch with the real English and interact with the language.

o que significa “XOXO” em inglês?

Escrevi há pouco tempo um texto intitulado “Vocabulário: Abraço” e acabei me esquecendo de falar sobre  XOXO, expressão popularizada pela série de TV Gossip Girl e também pela canção XO de Beyoncé. Perguntado por um leitor, resolvi complementar o post original aqui.

Sabemos que XOXO quer dizer “Abraços e beijos” e é a forma usada para encerrarmos informalmente uma carta ou e-mail. Entretanto, não existe consenso quanto à origem da expressão. Há quem afirme que o X representa os lábios de duas pessoas se beijando e a letra O, quatro braços formando um abraço. Outra teoria diz que o X é a representação dos braços e o O significa o formato da boca ao beijar. What's the meaning of "Sleep Tight"

Today's topic I'm going to talk about the Idiom "Sleep Tight" and its origin. This 19th century expression isn't, as is often wrongly claimed, a reference to the tightness of the strings used to support mattresses. 'Tight' just means 'soundly/properly' and 'sleep tight' just means 'sleep soundly'. The word was probably chosen because of its rhyme with night, so people wished other 'good night, sleep tight'.
