The world was surprised by the choice of the first Latin American pope, the first Jesuit to become pope, and the first to adopt the name Francis. In his days as pontiff he captivated the world with his simplicity and surprising atitudes

On the evening of March 13 the world was introduced to a new pope: the smiling and charismatic Argentinean Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio. The next day, Bergoglio went to the hotel he stayed at during the conclave, and paid the bill [1]. He did not want to wear [2] the traditional gold ring [3] that other popes wore. Nor did he want to wear the beautiful red shoes [4] made for the Pontiff, and he kept on wearing his old black shoes. On March 22 he celebrated a Mass for the Vatican's gardeners [5] and janitors [6]. Days after being chosen to be the new pope, he called a newsstand [7] in Buenos Aires to tell the owner that he wanted to cancel his subscription [8] to the newspaper La Nacion, as he was now living in Rome. This snippet [9] was revealed by his sister, Maria Elena. The new pope also telephoned priest friends in Buenos Aires.

Making his own meals

Bergoglio was born in Buenos Aires. While still a Cardinal, he lived in a small apartment in the Argentinean capital, and used to make his own meals. He used to take the bus and subway, and visit the slums [10] in the city. Pope Francis likes tango and soccer (he is a fan of San Lorenzo). In 2001 he visited a hospital and washed and kissed the feet of 12 patients with AIDS.  When he was young, he had a serious illness and lost part of one lung [11]. Time went by and Jorge Bergoglio seems to be in good health, aged 76.

Through moving songs such as “Someone Like You,”  Adele has shown the world that you can be successful without wearing extravagant outfits [1] or doing sexy dances

Adele had a fabulous 2011. Her second album, “21”, was the biggest-seller in the UK and in several other countries last year. The album includes two of the biggest hits of 2011: “Someone Like You,” and “Rolling in the Deep.” In November, Adele had surgery on her vocal cords. To recover fully from the surgery [2], she will have to go a few months without singing. Adele does not wear extravagant outfits or do sexy dance routines at her shows. She has won over the world through her ​​beautiful voice and her emotional interpretations. Adele tends to write songs about heartbreak [3]. In 2008 she released her first album, “19”, when she met the love of her life. In 2009, however, she was abandoned by the man she loved. Adele used music as her therapy and composed several songs ‘inspired’ by the end of her relationship. “Someone Like You” is one. Adele Laurie Blue Adkins was born in Tottenham, in London, on May 5, 1988. Her mother, Penny Adkins, was left by her boyfriend during the pregnancy and had to raise [4] her only daughter alone.

Guaratinguetá, the city of Friar Galvão

The city where the first Brazilian saint was born has begun to welcome more and more tourists

  An increasing number of tourists is visiting Guaratinguetá, a city with a population of 110,000 about six kilometers from Aparecida. In 2006 the city welcomed an average of about 50 tourist buses at weekends – now it is 200 buses. Religious tourism will boost the local economy. New hotels and restaurants will be built. The Santo Antônio Cathedral and Friar Galvão Museum are two of the most popular places for tourists. In a small room at the back of the Cathedral the famous Friar Galvão pills are produced. In total about 90,000 pills are produced a month. The pills are also produced in theMosteiro da Luz, in São Paulo, where about 5,000 units are distributed a day.

A brief biography of the Brazilian Saint

    Friar Galvão was a tall and handsome man. He came from a traditional and rich family, but preferred to turn his back on comfort to become a Franciscan monk. In 1762 he went to live in São Paulo and it was there that he was ordained as a priest. At that time he was famous for performing miracles. One of his great works was the construction of the Mosteiro da Luz.  He got the money for the construction through donations. Friar Antônio de Sant'Anna Galvão was born in Guaratinguetá in 1739 and lived in that city until he was thirteen years old, before living for a while in Bahia. He spent sixty years of his life in São Paulo, where he died on December 23^rd 1822. Friar Galvão will be canonized thanks to two miracles attributed to him, which have been recognized by the Vatican. Some researchers, however, believe he performed over 30,000 miracles.

Brazil follows Giane’s fight against cancer. The actor has had special support from his ex-wife, Marília Gabriela In early

    August Brazil was shocked by the news that actor Reynaldo Gianecchini has lymphoma, cancer of the lymphatic [2] system. This disease affects the immune system. It is the same type of cancer that Dilma Rousseff faced before being elected President. However, in Giane’s case the cancer is more aggressive. The actor spent several days in a São Paulo hospital before starting chemotherapy [3]. He was visited by Cláudia Raia and other celebrities. One of the people who visited and supported Giane was his ex-wife, Marilia Gabriela. On September 15 they were photographed walking together on Oscar Freire street, in São Paulo.  Giane was bald, [4]  after having gone through two rounds of chemotherapy. Reynaldo and Marilia separated in 2006 after 8 years of marriage. But even after the separation, they kept in regular touch.  

                      Sports stars ill [5]   In recent weeks other celebrities have hit the headlines because of serious health problems: the former soccer star Sócrates, who has a serious liver [6] problem, and the coach of Vasco da Gama, Ricardo Gomes, who suffered a stroke [7]. But the disease that Gianecchini is suffering from has caused the biggest shock in the country. The actor's father also has cancer. Besides being helped by doctors, Giane and his father have also sought [8] spiritual help. On the next page we give you a summary of the actor’s personal and professional life.

On September 28, Giane visited the support group for children with cancer, GACC, in São José dos Campos-SP, and spoke to several children. The actor has supported GACC since 2003.  He is going to take part in a new campaign to help the hospital GACC runs.

Renato Russo’s fiftieth birthday 

Former [1] leader of Legiăo Urbana would have turned 50 at the end of March, had he been alive [2]. Today, 14 years after his death, he is still remembered as one of the greatest pop rock legends in Brazil

People say that a rocker [3] who dies young becomes a legend. Renato Russo died of AIDS when he was only 36 years old.  Had he been alive, he would have celebrated his 50^th  birthday on March 27^th. But it would be unfair [4] to say that he became a legend for dying [5] so soon. Renato became a legend basically by being the leader of the most influential band in the history of Brazil’s pop rock:   Legiăo Urbana.  He became a myth by writing  (together with Dado Villa-Lobos and Marcelo Bonfá) some of the classics of Brazil’s pop music history.  Classics such as Pais e Filhos,Eduardo e Mônica and Que País é Este? Legiăo Urbana was created in Brasília, in 1982, and split up in 96, soon after Russo’s death.  It is estimated that, over this period, the band sold more than 20 million albums. Even after the end of the band, Legiăo’s albums continued with high sales, just like Renato Russo’s solo albums. The power of the band’s legacy (and the “rock n’ roll poet”) can also be measured [6] on the Internet.  There are more than 500 communities on Orkut dedicated to Legiăo Urbana (the largest one has more than 500,000 members) and other hundreds of communities dedicated to  Renato Russo. The figures [7] are higher than any other band or singer in the Brazilian music.

English teacher

Renato Manfredini Júnior was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1960. From 1967 to 1970 he lived in New York.  But he lived most of his young life in Brasília. At the age of 15, he started teaching English and it was then when he lived one of his life’s worst [8] dramas. A severe [9] disease left him in awheelchair [10] for months. After overcoming [11] the disease, Renato was more focused on music. His first band was Abortos Elétricos. It was formed in 1978 and went on for 4 years. After that Legiăo Urbana was created and the rest is the story everyone knows.

The visionary who co-founded Apple, died Wednesday , October 5,  at age 56, after a long battle against pancreatic cancer

         Steve Jobs changed the way we use technology. He changed

 the daily habits of millions by reinventing computing, music and mobile phones. He moved technology from garages to pockets, took entertainment from discs to bytes and turned gadgets into extensions of the people who use them. His death sparked an outpouring of tributes as world leaders, business rivals and fans alike lamented his premature passing and celebrated his monumental achievements. Thousands of celebrities and ordinary people went on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube to record their tributes and memories of the man behind products such as the iPod, the iPhone, the iPad.   President Barack Obama said Wednesday night that the "world has a lost a visionary" with the passing of Apple founder Steve Jobs. "Steve was among the greatest of American innovators - brave enough to think differently, bold enough to believe he could change the world, and talented enough to do it," the president said in a statement. "He transformed our lives, redefined entire industries, and achieved one of the rarest feats in human history: he changed the way each of us sees the world," Mr Obama said. 

       Apple has posted this statement on its website: “Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.”

The Brazilian singer plays a historic show inMadison Square Garden, the most famousstage [1] in the world, and grabs [2] the attention of the US press [3]

Ivete Sangalo is more than just an excellent singer. She infects the audience with her energy, joy and sense of humor, whether on a stage or on a truck [4] in Salvador’s carnival.

She is having one of the best times of her life. In October 2009 the singer fromBahia celebrated the birth of her first child. In February this year she shared [5] the stage with no less than Beyoncé, in a show in Salvador, and recently she played big shows in theUSA and Canada. Ivete is beginning to get known on the international scene. On September 4^th she played a historic show in New York, in Madison Square Garden, the most famous arena in the world. Ivete was the first Brazilian singer to play there. The show was a hit – 15,000 people went to see it. About 1,000 people were involved in the production. According to an article in the newspaper O Globo, the total cost of putting [6] the show on was US$ 5 million.

Brazil’s Beyoncé

Ivete’s performance echoed round the US press. Several journalists praised [7] her talent and charisma. Some of them called her Brazil’s Beyoncé. However, for The New York Times’ music critic, Jon Pareles,  Ivete will find it difficult to become a big international star because of the style of her music (axé) and also because she sings in Portuguese. Ivete couldn’t impress him, but she has already shared the stage with big pop stars, such as Shakira and Alejandro Sanz, and she has sung in English and Spanish. There is a big chance that Shakira and Ivete will play shows together in Brazil in 2011, according to an article published in the newspaper O Estado de SP.

He married, had four children, and worked for some time as a lawyer. Gandhi worked for about twenty years in South Africa and it was there that he began to attract attention in his struggle for the rights of Indians living there. Gandhi returned to India in 1914 and at the beginning of the 1920s for the first time he faced up to the British government, when he organized a general strike. Gandhi became the main leader of the Indian independence movement. He managed to convince millions of Indians that the best way forward was peaceful protest. He defended peaceful protests such as strikes, marches, fasting, and the boycott of English-made products. Gandhi was arrested several times, but in 1947 finally India achieved its independence. However, Gandhi’s joy was not to last long. On January 30th 1948 he was assassinated by a radical Hindu. The “Great Soul” Throughout his life Gandhi fought racism and social injustice, and did everything he could to try to bring Hindus and Muslims in India together. In Sanskrit, Mahatma means “great soul”.  Gandhi was a spiritual being. He turned his back on material comfort, fasted for long periods, practiced yoga and used to pray a lot. He used to say, “We can defeat the enemy with love, never with hate”. His philosophy of life inspired other famous pacifists, such as Dr. Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela. In 1982, Hollywood produced a film about Gandhi’s life, wining nine Oscars. Campos do Jordão, Brazil's “Swiss” resort

The cold temperatures, the European architecture, the beautiful mountains, clean air and quaint [1] streets are like Europe. In June and July the city is visited by more than one million tourists  

    Campos do Jordão lies in the Mantiqueira Mountains, at an altitude of almost 1,700 meters, just under 170 km from São Paulo. This city of 47,000 people attracts mainly wealthier visitors and the odd [2] celebrity (some of them have mansions in the town). Those visiting the city for the first time feel like they are in a typical Swiss town.  The cold climate, the architectural style ofits buildings, the beautiful mountains, clean air and the quaint streets are like Europe. Vila Capivari is the hippest  [3] part of the city. This neighborhood is home to many shops specializing in knitwear [4] and chocolate, as well as bars, restaurants and hotels.  In Capivari tourists can take acable car [5] bound for Morro do Elefante, a mountain whose peak is at an altitude of around 1,800 meters. On the ride tourists get a breathtaking [6] view of Capivari and the city's landmarks. The natural beauty of Campos do Jordão can also be taken [7] in on a train ride.

Stunning nature

The beautiful landscapes of the city include a large number of beautiful trees. One of them, the Araucaria conifer [8], is considered to be the symbol of the city. For those who enjoy ecological sports, the city offers great options, including fishing, canopy [9] tours, horseback riding and beautifulhiking trails [10]. Another tip is to visit the nearby town of Santo Antônio do Pinhal, which is a fewkilometers away.

The young actors Marina and Klebber stand out[1] in the soap opera Morde e Assopra ,  playingtroubled [2]  characters

   Alice is a spoiled [3] and arrogant little girl. She is the daughter of the mayor of Preciosa and has a nasty [4]  habit of calling poor people “mutts.” [5]  Guilherme is the son of ahousemaid [6], but to impress the beautiful Alice he lies [7], and tells her he is a doctor and that his (rich) parents live far away. They begin dating, but when Alice discovers that Guilherme is lying, she ends the relationship,though [8] she is still in love with him. This is a summary of the lives of the characters Alice and Guilherme in the soap opera Morde e Assopra (Globo, 7.30 PM).  During the course of the soap opera these flawed [9] characters will face some unexpected problems. But their suffering will help them become better people. In real life, Marina Ruy Barbosa and Klebber Toledo began dating during the filming of the soap opera. He is 25 years old and made his TV debut in 2007, working onthe show Malhação. Before becoming an actor, Toledo played volleyball from 15 to 17 years of age, and then worked as a waiter [10], salesman [11] and even a dance teacher. Marina is much younger, at only 16, but she has more TV experience than her boyfriend. She made her debut on Globo at nine years of age and was in four soap operas before Morde e Assopra.

Alline Moraes back with a bang

After a brilliant performance in 2008, playing a psychopath in the soap opera Duas Caras, Alline has come back with a bang [1]. In Viver a Vida she plays a model who ends up in a wheelchair after suffering a serious accident

Beauty helps open a lot of doors. One good example of this is to be found on television. In recent years beautiful models have been invited to act in soap operas and series. Alline Moraes was one of them. In 2002 a Globo director was amazed [2] by her beauty and decided to invite the young model to act in the soap opera “Coração de Estudante.” She went on [3] to make other soap operas but without impressing the critics. In 2008, however, Alline was outstanding [4] when she played an anti-hero for the first time in her career – the psychopath Sílvia in the soap opera Duas Caras. She was so convincing that Brazil was outraged [5] by the character. Now Alline is back in the limelight [6] because of her performance in the soap opera “Viver a Vida” (Globo 9 PM). She has thrilled millions with her performance as Luciana, a rich and spoiled [7] model who is left quadriplegic [8]after a serious car accident in Jordan.

Career on the catwalk

Alline Moraes was born in Sorocaba, São Paulo State, in December 1982, and began working as a model at just 14 years old. Throughout her teens [9] she worked in such cities as Tokyo, Paris, Milan, and New York. In recent years she has dedicated herself more to acting [10]. Despite the fame and glamour, Alline likes simple things, like meeting people and visiting new places. Her favorite thing, however, is working. In her blog, Alline describes herself as an authentic workaholic.
