Como se diz “não ter papas na língua” em inglês?

A dica de hoje vem do blog INFLUX ENGLISH SCHOOL como se diz não ter papas na língua em inglês? Lembre-se, nada pode ser traduzido ao pé da letra!

A expressão “não ter papas na língua” em português significa o mesmo que “não medir as palavras” ou seja, “falar sem rodeios”, “falar o que pensa”. Em inglês, existem algumas maneiras de expressar essa ideia; porém, há uma expressão em especial cuja equivalência é muito precisa. Vejam abaixo:

not mince (your) words  = não ter papas na língua, não medir as palavras, falar o que pensa, etc.

Como curiosidade, o verbo to mince significa “moer”, “picar”, e é usado principalmente com carne (to mince the meat = moer a carne; minced beef = carne moída). Então, ao pé da letra, a expressão “not mince words” significa “não moer as palavras”.

She doesn’t mince her words. = She doesn’t mince words. Ela não tem papas na língua.

He doesn't mince his words when he has an opinion. Ele não tem papas na língua quando tem algo a dizer.

She certainly doesn’t mince her words and always speaks her mind. Ela certamente não tem papas na língua e sempre fala o que pensa.

Her husband doesn’t mince words. = Her husband doesn’t mince his words. O marido dela não tem papas na língua. / O marido dela não mede as palavras.

Água com gás e água sem gás em Inglês?

Se quiser beber água com gás, não peça water with gas. É bem provável que você seja envenenado se assim proceder.

Nos Estados Unidos, diga: club soda, sparkling water, mineral water (já vem com gás). Na Inglaterra, prefira: fizzy water e sparkling water. Água com gás é tecnicamente conhecida como carbonated water, mas não é coisa que se peça para beber. Comum nos dois países é a água pedida pelo nome da grife (designer water), assim:

– Can I have a Perrier please?

– Sorry sir, we’re out of Perrier. Would Malvern be ok? (Lamento, acabou a Perrier, serve Malvern?)

Caso prefira água sem gás, peça bottled water (recuso-me a traduzir isso), spring water (da fonte) ou mesmo ordinary water. Outra denominação comum é still water. Still, nesse caso, nada tem a ver com a tradução de “ainda”. Still significa algo que não se mexe, parado.

A friend in need is a friend indeed  is an Idiom and it means:  A friend in need is a friend indeed says that people often act friendly when they want to get something from us.  Example: "Hey buddy, how's it going? You look good. I love your jacket. Do you think you can give me a ride home?" Reply: "A friend in need is a friend indeed."  A friend in need is a friend indeed can be said when you notice that someone is being extra friendly to you and acting like your good friend as a way to get you to give them what they need.  Definitely, in my point view I translate this in Portuguese....os amigos são para as ocasiões. 10 dicas do que não faze rde jeito nenhum para aprender Inglês!

1)      Focar o tempo todo na gramática! Os maiores especialistas recomendam que não deve focar muito em gramáticas, é como pensar o tempo todo no que falar, a língua é automática!

2)      Estudar exaustivamente palavra por palavra e decorar.

3)      É comum pensarmos em Português ou na língua nativa de seu país para falarmos em Inglês. É preciso focar o tempo todo, pensar automaticamente, isso se dá com o tempo.

4)      Medo e ansiedade, frustação com erros, insegurança também é uma das barreiras que devem ser quebradas. Lembre-se, somente a prática leva a perfeição. Mantenha a motivação e continue praticando.

5)      Não aprenda apenas em sala de aula, dedique-se pelo menos 10 minutos por dia.

6)      Falar antes de desenvolver essas habilidades, praticar o listening e a leitura. Não funciona.

7)      Não use palavras negativas, não crie barreiras, foque no que você quer.

8)      Faça por prazer, não por que seu pai quer, por que o mercado obriga. Tenha o hábito da leitura constante e da imersão natural no idioma.

9)      Esqueça os métodos milagrosos, fluência leva tempo e determinação. Varia de aluno para aluno, do nível intelectual de cada um.

10)   Seja você mesmo, não tente imitar nativos, o tempo, a prática e perfeição trará a fluência natural.
