Dengue fever(1) feels like(2) a severe(3) case of the flu(4), including pain(5) in themuscles(6) and joints(7). The World Health Organization says there may be(8) fifty million dengue infections every year. Deaths(9) are rare(10), fewer than(11) thirteen thousand a year.
But
dengue has spread(12) sharply(13) since(14) the nineteen seventies. Thedisease(15) is found mostly(16) in cities. The WHO says forty percent of the world’s population is now at risk(17) in more than one hundred countries. Southeast Asia and theWestern(18) Pacific are the most affected.
Dengue is also found in Africa, the Americas and the eastern(19) Mediterranean. There is no vaccine against(20) dengue and no special treatment(21). Scott Ritchie of James Cook University in Queensland, Australia, says control efforts(22) target(23) the mosquitoes that spread dengue.
He says the only way(24) to control it is through(25) the use of pesticides chemicals andperhaps(26) community education. But some mosquitoes are getting resistant(27) to those pesticides. He and other scientists from Australia and the United States are working on a different plan of attack.
They blocked the growth(28) of dengue virus in mosquitoes by infecting them with akind of(29) bacteria called Wolbachia pipientis. Wolbachia is commonly(30) found in fruitflies(31) and is safe(32) for people. The researchers(33) released(34) mosquitoes infected with Wolbachia into an indoor(35) test area filled with(36) uninfected(37)mosquitoes.
The infected ones mated with(38) the uninfected ones and successfully(39) spread the bacteria. The researchers then tried(40) their experiment outdoors(41). Over(42) a two-month period they released more than three hundred thousand infected mosquitoes in two Australian towns.
Scott O’Neill at Monash University in Melbourne says the mosquitoes quickly(43) infectedwild(44) populations just as(45) they had in the indoor test. Once(46) the release has stopped, the Wolbachia continued to increase(47) until(48) the experiments ended.Next(49), the plan is to do tests over the next two to three years in an area where many people are infected with dengue.
The researchers described(50) their work in two papers published in the journal Nature.Mosquitoes also(51) spread malaria. The kind of mosquito that injects the malaria parasite into the people it bites(52) is most active around sunset(53) and sunrise. So bed nets(54) can help protect people while(55) they sleep. But the mosquito that spreads dengue, Aedes aegypti, is most active during the day.For VOA Special English, I’m , I’m Alex Villarreal.

Speak Up, joke...You see, officer...

Standard: American accent
Speaker: Chuck Rolando
English level: C1 Advanced

You see, officer...

A man was pulled over for speeding down the down the highway. The officer came to the driver’s window and said. “Sir, may I see your driver’s license and registration?”

The man said. “Well, officer, I don’t have a license: It was taken away for a DUI. (Driving Under the Influence). “The officer, in surprise, said, “What, do you have a registration for the vehicle?” So the man replied, “No, sir: the car is not mine. I stole it, but I am pretty sure I saw a registration card in the glove box when I put the gun in it.”

The office stepped back: “There is a gun in the glove box?” The man sighed and said, “Yes, sir: I used it to kill the woman who owned the car, before I stuffed her in the trunk.” The officer steps toward the back of the car and says, “Sir do not move, I am calling for backup.”

The officer calls for backup and about 10 minutes later another highway patrolman arrives. He walks up to the window slowly and asks the man for his driver’s license and registration. The man says, “Yes officer: here it is, right here.”

“It all checked out, so the officer said, “Is there a gun in the glove box, sir?”
The man laughs and says, “No, officer, why would there be a gun in the glove box?” He opened the glove box and showed him that there was no gun. The second officer asked him to open the trunk because he had reason to believe that there was a body in it. The man agrees and opens the trunk: no dead body.

The second officer says, “Sir I do not understand : the officer that pulled you over said that you did not have a license, the car was stolen, there was a gun in the glove box, and a dead body in the trunk.” The man looks the officer in the eyes and says, “Yeah, and I’ll bet he said I was speeding, too!”

Halloween: a 2500-year-old tradition
Learn a bit about the origin and symbols of this event held all over the world

The Celts were people who lived over 2,500 years ago inEurope. On the 31st October they got together to commemorate the end of summer, the end of the harvest and the start of a new year. However, this date did not only signify happiness for the Celts. They also believed that on that date the spirits of dead people returned to the world to try to reincarnate in the bodies of people in that region. To face them, the Celts dressed in the most frightening manner possible and hit the streets carrying lit candles and making noise to scare away the bad spirits.
In the modern world, Halloween appeared in the XIX Century, when the Irish took the party to the United States. But there this ancient European tradition ended up as a happy children's party, in which children dress up and ask for candy from house to house, saying trick or treat. It is such a party that October 31st is a holiday in the United States and stores register record sales.

“Day of the Witches” in Brazil

Halloween is a traditional event in many countries, but only recently started to be popular in Brazilamong the young and old alike. Schools and even nightclubs now organize parties and fancy dress balls on this date, which is also known here as  Dia das Bruxas”.
The legend of Jack O’ Lantern      One of the most traditional symbols of Halloween is a pumpkin in the shape of a face, known as “Jack O' Lantern” – This tradition appeared through Irish folklore. The legend says that there was a man called Jack who could not get into heaven because he had been very bad and was also expelled from hell because he played tricks on the Devil. He was then condemned to prowl the earth eternally, carrying a lantern to light his way.
