The King and I

Now an interview with Colin Firth

Interview

THE KING AND I

British actor Colin Firth is the star of one of the most acclaimed movies in recent years: The King’s Speech. The film, which is directed by Tom Hooper, tells the story of King George VI. Before he ascended to the throne, he was known as Prince Albert. He was destined for a life for a relative obscurity, but all that changed dramatically ally in 1936, when his older brother, King Edward VIII, abdicated in order to marry an American divorcee. Wallis Simpson, Albert –or “Bertie” –was suddenly thrust into the limelight. He suffered from a severe speech impediment and the idea of having to speak in public and make a radio broadcasts to the nation traumatised him. The film tells the story of his relationship with an Australian speech therapist, Lionel Logue, who is played by Geoffrey Rush, while Helena Ronham Carter plays King George VI’s wife. Queen Elizabeth.

THE WAR

The Second World War broke out in 1939 and George VI’s task became even harder. He died in 1952, at the age of 55, and was succeeded by his daughter, the current Queen.

When Colin Firth met with the press, he was asked about his preparation for the role, but as he admitted, he hadn’t had much contact with Britain’s Royal Family.

Colin Firth

(Standard British accent)

I was at an event where Prince Charles who’s very gracious with the people he meets, was being ushered around by his private secretary and he would try his best to give as much as of his focus and his interest and he would usually know quite a lot about the people he was speaking to, but the private secretary would be making sure that he didn’t get too long with that person because there’s somebody else in line and he would make that that’s very carefully marshaled. And it was interesting to see people who are otherwise composed and would actually claim not to be impressed by royally suddenly completely transforming and becoming very, very nervous! And you realise that, if you are a member of the Royal Family, you are surrounded by people who are like that all the time and probably that’s how you see the human race!

METHOD ACTING
As Colin Firth admits, preparing for the role of a king wasn’t easy.

Colin Firth
If I were playing a cab driver, I’d probably want to hang around with a cab driver, and maybe drive a cab, and just see what it’s like. And, you know, if I was playing an astronaut, I’d try to meet one, but you don’t get to meet kings and hang around with them, and so your information is secondary: you might meet someone who knows that person. As I said, you can look at what happens when people are around Prince Charles and think, “Wow, that’s what the world looks like to you!” but you never meet a person who’s relaxed and gives you a pat on the back and says. “What’s up?” No one does that! So you try to accumulate that kind of information.  There are a lot of letters, there are a lot of people who have been close to the Royal family, in one capacity or another, and we did speak to people in that position. And you read and you listen and then you just use your imagination.

THE LADY DI FACTOR

Not surprisingly, he was asked for his thoughts about the monarchy:

Colin Firth

I don’t watch them closely, so I don’t know. I mean, I find it very difficult to answer questions about the monarchy because I’m just not a royal watcher, you know, and some people are. I just don’t know anything about them, but it was… an extraordinary moment happened in England, I think, when, at the death o Princess Diana, because, obviously, it was enormous, the effect, emotionally. I mean, people really did become incredibly emotional right across the country. The Queen was criticised, the Palace were criticized for not lowering the flag; it took few days for that to happen and people were emoting all over the place here: “Catch up!” I don’t know what is happening in their real lives behind closed doors. They have the right not to exhibit it to the public, just as any one other family do. I don’t want to be photographed hugging my kids either! But it’s very interesting, somebody made a comment around that time – a columnist said, “It’s interesting about the …”because this idea of British repression has always been a stereotype, which is qualifiable  anyway. I think the English are just as accurately represented by the Rolling Stones, as they are By John Major, or somebody.

THE GERMANS

I mean, the Royal Family aren’t even English anyway! Philip’s Greek, the rest of them are German, you know, they’re immigrants: we (are) all a mixed nation! But this guy said: “We seem to have gone overnight from a country that can’t talk about their emotions to a country that can’t talk about their emotions to a country that cannot stop!”

Everybody was, like, holding each other and hugging each other and suddenly it became essential to hug each other, and, you know: “Have you hugged your kids lately? Have you…how many times have you told them you love them?” and the English have turned into that!

Filming The King’s Speech

Colin Firth also talked about shooting the therapy session scenes with Geoffrey Rush.

It was like doing live theatre in a way. His energy and his humorous gave me so much for nothing. What seemed to be an immense mountain to climb was incredibly easy just because I was in the hands, not only of a director like that but I had an actor who energized me in every way I needed.

What tricks did you use to get that stammer? I don’t know!

Where you able to shed to shed it at the end of the day and?

Oh no, I got a bit confused in my own speech patterns. You know, if you do an exercise often enough, your body will train itself to do that exercise. If you shoot enough baskets you’ll probably get one, you know. If you train yourself to interfere with your brain remembers that and follows it. I spoke to the head of the British Stammering Association a couple of weeks ago and he told me that the research shows now that there’s a strong neurological component. This is not a psychological problem. There’s something happening in the brain that’s physical. I said, “Does that mean that Logue’s on the wrong track trying to get to this through a psychological process? And he said, “Well no, because the therapy helps you come to an accommodation with the problem.” “You learn not be crushed by it, not to be disabled by it. You can find a way forward. There are wonderful great actors who fought stammering.

Tribute
Brazil: 20 years without the King of baiãoLuiz Gonzaga died in August 1989. His songs were inspired by the daily lives of people in the Northeast of Brazil

August 2nd marks 20 years since Luiz Gonzaga died. He wrote some of the biggest classics in Brazilian musical history, such as “Asa Branca” and “O Xote das Meninas”. Known as the “King of baião”, Gonzaga was chiefly responsible for promoting music from the Northeast of Brazil. For decades Brazil listened to Gonzaga playing the accordion and wearing clothes that were typical of the Northeast, such as a leather hat. His lyrics spoke of pain and love for the people in the Northeast.  Luiz Gonzaga was born in Exu, Pernambuco State, in 1912. His son, Gonzaguinha, (killed in a traffic accident in 1991) was also a very talented singer and songwriter.

A century since the death of Euclides da Cunha
He wrote “Os Sertões”, one of the great works in Brazilian literature

Euclides da Cunha died tragically on August 15th 1909. He was killed by his wife’s lover. This tragic story was told by Globo TV, in the miniseries Desejo, aired in 1990. Euclides  was born in 1866, in Cantagalo, Rio de Janeiro. He worked as a teacher, engineer, journalist and writer. In 1897 he travelled to Canudos, in Bahia, to cover the “Guerra dos Canudos” (1896-1897) for the newspaper O Estado de SP.  His reports formed the base of his masterpiece Os Sertões, published in1902. In the book Euclides details the everyday lives of the northeastern people, who suffer from starvation, drought, social injustice and government neglect.

Fairytale
Countdown to the
Royal Wedding

Kate and William will marry on April 29 in London, in front of kings, princes and heads of state [1] from around the world

It is normal for the bride [2] and groom [3] to get nervous andanxious in the days leading up to their wedding. But in the case of Prince William, the nervousness is perhaps somewhat amplified. In late March he confessed to the British press that he has had trouble sleeping. This nervousness is with good reason: the images of his marriage to Kate Middleton will be beamed [4] around the world. The ceremony will be held on April 29, at Westminster Abbey, in London. About 1,900 people, including relatives, friends, kings, and heads of state from around the world have been invited to the wedding. After the ceremony there will be a reception for 600 guests [5] at Buckingham Palace. Among the guests are celebrities such as singer Elton John and the couple David and Victoria Beckham. William and Kate do not want to get any wedding gifts. The couple has asked guests to make donations to charities.

Courtship began in Scotland

William met Kate in 2001 when both were students at St. Andrews University, in Scotland. Two years later they started dating. Speculation about a possible marriage lasted so long that the British press dubbed [6] Kate "Waity Katy." This long courtship [7] has gone through several crises over the past few years but finally, in October 2009, William asked Kate to marry him during a vacation in Kenya.

Welcome to PEOPLE IN AMERICA, a program in VOA Special English. Today Rich Kleinfeldt and Steve Ember tell about one of America's most popular singers, Elvis Presley.
(MUSIC)
That song, "Hound Dog," was one of Elvis Presley's most popular records.  It sold five million copies in nineteen fifty-six.  Music industry experts say more than one thousand million of Elvis's recordings have sold throughout the world.  He was a success in many different kinds of music -- popular, country, religious, and rhythm and blues.
Elvis Presley won many awards from nations all over the world, yet he did not record in any language other than English.  He never performed outside the United States, except for three shows in Canada.  Yet, his recordings and films have been, and are still, enjoyed by people all over the world.
Elvis Aaron Presley was born in the southern town of Tupelo, Mississippi on January eighth, nineteen thirty-five.  His family was extremely poor.  During his childhood, he sang in church with his parents.  He also listened to music that influenced his later singing, including country, rhythm and blues, and religious music.  Elvis and his family moved to Memphis, Tennessee when he was thirteen.
After high school, he had several jobs, including driving a truck.  In nineteen fifty-three, he made his first recording of this song, "My Happiness":
(MUSIC)
Elvis Presley recorded the song at the Memphis Recording Service.  The story is that he paid four dollars to make a recording for his mother.  A woman who worked at the public recording studio had another job with a local independent record company called Sun Records.  She made a second recording of Elvis's songs because she thought the owner of Sun Records should hear him sing.
The owner of Sun Records, Sam Phillips, had been looking for a white performer who could sing black rhythm and blues.  He suggested Elvis work with a guitar player and a bass player.  Several months later Mr. Phillips agreed to have the group make a record.  It was released on July nineteenth, nineteen fifty-four.  One of the songs was "That's All Right":
(MUSIC)
The record sold well in Memphis, and was played a lot on local radio stations.  To let others hear Elvis, Sam Phillips organized a series of performances at country fairs in the area.  One of the people who heard Elvis perform at these shows was Colonel Tom Parker.  Elvis signed an agreement that Colonel Parker would organize his appearances.
One of Elvis' first new recordings became a huge hit, and led to his many appearances on television.  It was "Heartbreak Hotel":
(MUSIC)
By the middle of the nineteen fifties, Elvis Presley was known around the world as the young man who moved his hips in a sexual way as he sang rock and roll music.  Many adults said he and his music were bad influences on young people.  Young women loved him.  Huge crowds attended his performances.
He made his first movie in nineteen fifty-six.  It was  "Love Me Tender." The title song was a big hit.
(MUSIC)
Elvis Presley was one of the highest paid actors in Hollywood for a number of years in the nineteen fifties.  He acted in thirty-one movies.
In nineteen fifty-eight, just as he finished making the movie "King Creole," Elvis received notice that he had to serve in the United States Army.
He was stationed in Germany where he lived in a large house and dated a lot of beautiful women.  One young girl he met in Germany was Priscilla Beaulieu, the daughter of an Army officer.  She was fourteen years old.  Later, after Elvis had finished his army service, she came to live with him in Memphis.   They married in nineteen sixty-seven, when she was twenty-one years old.  He was thirty-two.  They became parents nine months later of a baby girl, Lisa Marie.
Colonel Parker made sure that songs Elvis had recorded earlier were released during the years he was in the army.  So Elvis was just as popular after his military service as he was before it.
Elvis Presley won three of the music industry's highest award, the Grammy.  He received the first one in nineteen sixty-seven.  It was for "How Great Thou Art," an album of religious music.
(MUSIC)
Elvis returned to performing live shows in nineteen sixty-nine, in Las Vegas, Nevada.  He then traveled around the country performing before huge crowds.  He began to take drugs to help him sleep.  He gained a lot of weight so he took drugs to help control his weight.  And he took extremely strong drugs to reduce pain.
Elvis also suffered from the emotional sickness, depression.  It became worse after his marriage ended. Elvis never permitted Priscilla to stay with him in Las Vegas or travel with him around the country.  He also did not want Priscilla to see other people when he was away from home.  And he spent time with other women.  Priscilla finally left him in nineteen seventy-two for another man.
Elvis Presley released many recordings of his performances during the nineteen seventies.  He also enjoyed great success on television.  His nineteen seventy-three television show from Hawaii was seen in forty countries by more than one thousand million people.
His last record album was called "Moody Blue."  He recorded it in nineteen seventy-six.  One of its hit songs was called "Way Down":
(MUSIC)
Elvis Presley died on August sixteenth, nineteen seventy-seven.  First reports said he had a heart attack, but later tests showed many drugs in his body.  Experts agree that these drugs probably caused his death.
Hundreds of thousands of people still visit his home, Graceland, in Memphis every year.  Fans continue to buy his music, making him the most popular recording artist ever.  Elvis Presley remains the undisputed King of Rock and Roll.
(MUSIC: "Good Rockin' Tonight")
This program was written by Nancy Steinbach.  Rich Kleinfeldt and Steve Ember were the narrators.  The producer was Paul Thompson.  I'm Faith Lapidus.  Listen again next week for another PEOPLE IN AMERICA program in VOA Special English.

Larry King

Source: Speak Up
English level: Pre-intermediate
Standardard: American accent

Who is the greatest television interviewer in the world? Oprah Winfrey, David Letterman, Jay Leno? No, says British journalist Piers Morgan, it is CNN’s legendary Larry King. But Morgan has a special interest here: he’s replacing Larry King on CNN. The final edition of Larry King Live aired on December 16th.

CELEBRITY GUESTS

King has interviewed over 40.000 people in his career. He’s interviewed President Clinton, Bush and Obama, and world leaders Mikhail Gorbachev and Yasser Arafat. His star guests include Tom Cruise, Madonna, Stephen Hawking, Bill Gates and many, many more. What’s king’s secret? He represents an American tradition. He looks like a 1940s newsman. He wears suspenders and a tie. Suspenders is (are) an American term: the British call them braces. He rolls his shirt sleeves up. And he welcomes his guests with a deep, friendly voice.

MIAMI

King has lived the American dream. He was born Lawrence Harvey Zeiger in 1933 into a working-class family in Brooklyn, New York. After his father’s death in 1943, the family was very poor. King left school at 18. He worked as a postman and a milkman. But he had a dream: he wanted to work in radio. It was impossible in New York, so he moved to Miami in 1957. He got a job as a cleaner at WAHR, local radio station. Several months later, he had his onw music show.

LOCAL STAR

He made his fist radio interviews in a local restaurant, Pumpernik’s. his guests included the restaurant’s waiters and people off the street. The pop star Bobby Darin walked in and gave him an exclusive interview. King quickly became famous. He made his television debut in 1960 with WPST-TV’s Miami Underground.

CRISIS

In December 1971 King’s world collapsed. Accused of grand larceny by a business partner, he lost his radio and television shows. He lost everything. Three months later, he was exonerated, but it was too late. It took several years, but King recovered. By 1978 he had his own national radio show from midnight to 5.30 am. Finally, he started the Larry King Live Show on CNN in June 1985. That program has finished, but King will continue to host special shows for CNN. His private life is colourful: he has been married eight times.

LARRY ZEIGER’S NEW NAME no audio available

It’s 1957. King is about to make his first broadcast for the Miami station. His boss Marshall Simmonds asks, “Ar you ready?” he says, “I1m ready.” Simmonds asks, “What name are using? You can’t use Zeiger. No one will remember it. You need another name.” King doesn’t have any ideas. A newspaper is open on the table and there is an advert for King’s Wholesale Liquors. Simmonds points at the paper. “How about King?” “It sounds good to me, “replies King. His boss laughs, “OK, Larry King. Good luck.
