Words and their stories: Medical Expressions

Source: www.voanews.com
Now, the VOA Special English program WORDS AND THEIR STORIES.
Many professions have their own words and expressions. This is true for the medical profession.  Doctors use many technical terms that most people do not understand. But there are also expressions we use every day to tell about a person’s health. Let me explain.
Last month, I was not feeling well. I was under the weather. I thought I had caught a cold. I had a runny nose, itchy eyes, a sore throat and a cough. I felt tired and run down. I was in poor condition because I had not been getting enough rest.
My body hurt all over. I also had severe head pains -- a real splitting headache. And I was running a fever. My body temperature was higher than normal.
At one point, I blacked out. That’s right, I was out cold. I lost consciousness and my friend had to bring me around. He used cold water on my face to restore my consciousness.
I grew concerned that I might take a turn for the worse. I did not want to become sicker because then surely I would be at death’s door.
My friend took me to the doctor. I told the doctor I thought I had come down with a cold. When the doctor saw me, she immediately wanted to run some tests. She said that medical tests would help her discover why I was sick. The doctor also asked when I had my last physical. I do not get yearlycheck-ups. But I probably should get a medical exam by a doctor every year.
Then the nurse drew my blood. She used a needle to take a small amount of blood from my arm. She sent it to a laboratory for tests. The nurse alsotook my temperature. She used a thermometer to measure my body temperature.
The doctor told me I had influenza, or the flu. But she told me I would recover soon. She said I was over the worst of the disease. She told me to rest at home and to stay away from other people because the flu can spread. It is contagious.
Thankfully, I did not have to go under the knife. I did not need an operation.  Instead, I did just what the doctor ordered. I went home and did exactly what was needed to become healthy again. Soon, I was on the mend. I was pulling through and recovering from my sickness.
Now, I am back on my feet. I am physically healthy again. Even better, the doctor has given me a clean bill of health. She says that I am one-hundred percent cured. I am back to normal and I feel great. In fact, I feel on top of the world. My friends say I now look like the picture of health.

Student's on top of the tower
Project Rodon and students of Tourism spot course, beautiful landscape, enchanted castle.

Inspired in the medieval castles from Europe the Architectonic style it seems the Castles from France, actually what inspired Ronilson to build a castle in the middle of Sertão (backwoods)?

When he was a little boy he dreamed to live in a round house shape or a castle, however he really inspired and motivated to construct after he watched a movie called “El Cid, El Campeador.” The movie telling about the Moorish and Christian war, the Scenario took place in Spain. And the main characters of the film, such as Rodrigo, is the oldest son called the name of the protagonist of the movie.

He spent 7 years to construct the castle. He started to built in 1984 and finished in 1991, by the way, he unfinished yet.

In 2006 it was setting of the film “As Pelejas de Ojuara, based in the book of Ney Leandro de Castro. Famous actor, such as Marcos Palmeira, Actress Fernanda Paes Leme and Flávia Alessandra were here.

As a matter fact, Biva’s Castle is a destination for tourists, and public and private Schools from Rio Grande do Norte they came there to visit and interested to hear about its history.

It’s located around 2 kilometres away the downtown, faced to asphalt road 288.

Xique-Xique’s complex:

                                  Climbing towards Xique-xique I

                                             Sex scene

                                  Dancing scene

Xique-Xique is an area that comprises a great number of Rock Art paintings the most relevant is the Xique-Xique I. It presents daily scenes such as: Hunting, fighting, dancing, and sexing ones. The Indigenous inscriptions belongs to period of Pleistocene to Holocene where the climatic era, fauna and flora were completely different according to archaeologists experts. It’s considering for specialists one of the most relevant in the Northeast Tradition, Serido Sub-tradition (name given to Indigenous peoples who settled down the Serido region. And the rock art painting from Serido, are similar to the rock art paintings in São Raimundo Nonato, in Piauí State, according to Anne Merrie Pessis the group travelled from Piaui towards Serido region for about 9.000 years B.P (Before Present).

In conclusion the Xique-Xique I is located 5 kilometres from the downtown, and it’s closed for visitors due the IPHAN is constructing a Walkways structure in order to give support to the tourist and of course developing the sustainable tourism in Serido Region.

Guitar Legends

This month sees the 19th edition of the Wirral’s International Guitar Festival on Great Britain. From November 7th  to 25th, top guitarists from all over the world will come to the Wirral Peninsula, an area to the west of Liverpool, a short ferry ride across the River Mersey. Festival Director Rob Smith says, “We have a concept programme that inspires people to discover both new and old artist.”

THE MERSEY BEAT

This year’s festival opens with The Gray Murphy Band, which recreate the sounds of famous players, from Django Reinhardt to Eric Clapton. It goes on to include a wealth of talent, from experienced players to newcomers. Among the highlights: Dominic Miller (Sting’s regular guitarist), within a quarter setting that includes percussionist Rhani Krija; Martyn Joseph, winner of the 2004 Best Male Artist Category in the BBC Welsh Music Awards; and guitar legend John Williams, who will perform twice, first England’s jazz guitar virtuoso John Etheridge, then in a solo recital that tops the festival on Sunday 25. You’ll find every style of guitar-playing: classical, jazz, rock, blues, slide, country and flamenco.

2-DAY START

Everyone is encouraged to bring their guitars to the festival; each year there are workshops where you learn new playing techniques and how to look after your guitar. This year, for example, Eric Lugosh will conduct a workshop specializing in the style and music of the legendary Rev. Gary Davis, and Brendan McCormack will run Starting Classical Guitar, a two-day course for beginners.
