Barretos – the national rodeo capital
The Festa do Peão de Boiadeiro mixes rodeos and musical shows and attracts hundreds of thousands of people every year

In August (from 18th to 28th) the small city of Barretos (115,000 inhabitants, 425 km from SãoPaulo) becomes the Brazilian rodeo capital. The Festa do Peão de Boiadeiro de Barretos is the biggest event of this kind in Latin America and one of the biggest in the world. In one rodeo there are several styles. The best known are those in which a cowboy rides a bull or a horse or that in which a cowboy tries to lasso a calf. Of all these styles, the most attractive is that in which a cowboy tries to spent as long as possible (at least 8 seconds) on a bucking bull.
Cowboys pray in the arena
One of the most emotional moments in a rodeo is a little before the beginning of each round: the cowboys taking part get together in the arena and, in front of the spectators, they pray for the protection of the Holy Mother.

How the festival came about
In 1955 a small group of young people from Barretos got together in a bar and decided to create the legendary Clube dos Independentes. Made up of young and rich single people, in 1956 this club organized the first Festa do Peão Boiadeiro held in Brazil and to this day “Os Independentes” are the ones responsible for the organization of this event.
