November 13 is a date that will go down in the history of this community. On this day, hundreds of police took it over [1] to begin clearing up [2] the most notorious of Rio’s shantytowns [3]
The residents of Rocinha have been given a Christmas present several weeks in advance. For decades this community was dominated by organized crime, but this nightmare ended on November 13, when the shantytown was taken over by more than 1,500 police, including officers from the Special Police Operations Battalion (BOPE). The operation was peaceful. There was no fighting back [4] from the criminals. This camedays after the arrest [5] of Nem, the local drug lord. He had run organized crime in the community since 2005. The Rio police estimated that the criminal gang led by Nem turned over [6] R$100 million a year by selling drugs.  The occupation of the shantytown by the security forces is fundamental to the Government of Rio de Janeiroestablishing a Police Pacification Unit (UPP) there. The Rocinha shantytown will be the nineteenth such community to get a UPP.

                              A “city” called Rocinha

Rocinha is in the south of Rio de Janeiro city, between two of the finest neighborhoods in the city, São Conrado and Gávea. Its population is estimated at about 100,000 people, bigger than most Brazilian cities. It can even be said that Rocinha is a real city. The residents have a health center [7],post office [8], schools, banks, and a diversified economy. There are even websites, newspapers, magazines, radio stations and TV channels that have been created within this community. In the past this shantytown had an even larger population. In the 1980s, Rocinha had 200,000 residents and was known worldwide as the largest shantytown in Latin America. In addition to bringing security to the residents, the occupation of Rocinha by the security forces will contribute to the growth of local tourism and real estate [9] values ​​for the community and its surrounding neighborhoods, such as São Conrado and Gávea.

One day, an average Joe was walking down the street. An average Joe is a common person – either male or female.  This average Joe was lost. He did not know Jackabout where he was going. By this, I mean he did not know anything about where to find things in the city.

So average Joe asked John Q. Public for directions to the nearest bank. John Q. Public is also a common person – male or female.

“Jeez Louise,” said John Q. Public. This is an expression of surprise. “Jeez Louise, don’t you know that all banks are closed today? It is Saturday.”

“For Pete’s sake,” said average Joe. This is also an expression used to show a feeling like surprise or disappointment.

“For Pete’s sake. I do not believe you,” said average Joe. He was being a doubting Thomas, someone who does not believe anything he is told.

died today aged 57 from an intestinal infection, a spokesperson for the Albert Einstein Hospital announced

     Sócrates, who in 1982 captained what is widely regarded as the best Brazil side never to have won the FIFA World Cup™ - was taken to the hospital late Friday after suffering food poisoning. The hospital said he had gone into septic shock and placed him on a ventilator and a dialysis machine but he was officially announced dead at 0630GMT. He had already been hospitalised twice in August and September this year with bleeding in his digestive tract, and recognised after these incidents that he had problems with alcohol.

   A report in the newspaper Folha de São Paulo claimed that Sócrates would be buried later on today in a private ceremony in the town of Ribeirão Preto, 300 kilometres outside Sao Paulo, where he began his playing career in 1974 for Botafogo. The Brazilian Football Federation (CBF) also announced that there would be a minute's silence before all today's matches in honour of 'one of the most brilliant players in the history of the Brazilian national side.'

    Sócrates also played in the 1986 FIFA World Cup but was not fully fit and is mainly remembered for missing a penalty in the quarter-final defeat by France. At club level he played for Brazilian giants Corinthians (1978-84) and had an unhappy sojourn in Italy with Fiorentina (1984/85).

     While at Corinthians he was one of the founders of a movement known as Corinthian Democracy, which formed in the 1980s. Under its principles, all decisions made by football clubs, including the contracting of new players and training schedules, had to be approved by a vote of all members.

THE HEBER SPRINGS CARDBOARD BOAT RACES

There are many crazy sports in the world, but the “Heber Springs’ World Championship Cardboard  Boat Races” must be the craziest. Heber Springs is a small town on the shore of Greers Ferry Lake. It is in Arkansas, in the United States. This year’s event takes place on July 30^th.

The Cardboard Boat Race is certainly spectacular. The boats aren’t simple boxes. They are all kinds of shapes and sizes. There are traditional pirate ships with crews of six of more people. There are one-man canoes. Last year there was Scooby Doo’s VW van and an incredible guitar-shaped ship.

THE SECRET…

All the boats have one thing in common, they are made of cardboard. They must survive four 200-metres races to win the championship, not just one! So how do they stay afloat? Local companies and families take months over their preparation. First the form of the ship is created using cardboard. The parts are glued together and joints are reinforced with tape. Small blocks of wood are used to mount oars and masts. But here’s the real secret the bottom of the boats are painted and then covered with wax.

Finally, the boats are taken to Sandy Beach and launched onto the lake. The Ozark Mountains form the magical background scene. The races begin. The crowds laugh as many of the boats sink. The winners are applauded. At the end of the day there is the Demolition Derby. The boats crash into each other. Only the strongest survive. Prizes are awarded to the winners. The Titanic award goes to the most dramatic sinking.

MYSTERY

There is something under the water of the lake. But race competitors needn’t worry. It isn’t a monster, it’s an old market town called Hidden. The town was submerged when the Greers Ferry Dam was built in the 1960s. The dam created the lake; and Hidden is there, several metres below its surface.

ECO-FRIENDLY

There’s just one more question: why cardboard? Organizer Marilyn Wright explains: “Because of the challenge. It’s a challenge to make it float! And it won’t pollute the lake, either.”
